REICHSTAG FIRE DECREE - TEXTORDER OF THE REICH PRESIDENTFOR THE PROTECTION OF PEOPLE AND STATEFEBRUARY 28, 1933
The full name of this decree is, "The Decree of the Reich President for the Protection of People and State" (German: Verordnung des Reichspräsidenten zum Schutz von Volk und Staat). This decree was issued after the Reichstag fire of 1933. The day after the fire, Hitler persuaded President Hindenburg (1847-1934) to issue the “Decree of the Reich President for the Protection of the People and State” (or the “Reichstag Fire Decree”). It suspended most of the basic rights of the Weimar Constitution and tightened the Reich's control over state governments. Thousands of Communists and Social Democrats were arrested and their meetings and papers were outlawed The decree voided many of the key civil liberties of German citizens. With Nazis in powerful positions in the German government, the decree was used as the legal basis for the imprisonment of anyone considered to be opponents of the Nazis, and to suppress publications that did not support the Nazi cause. The decree is considered by historians to be one of the key steps in the establishment of a one-party Nazi state in Germany.
