The Shahada is the Islamic statement of faith and is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is also part of the Adhan (the Islamic call to prayer).
When one converts to Islam, they must state the Shahada in front of at least two witnesses.
In the Quran, parts of the Shahada such as, "There is no god but Allah," and "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah," appear multiple times.
We will cite two of the verses where these appear in the Quran. "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah (37:35), and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (48:29)."
The Shahada is also in the Hadith literature. You can find it in Sahih al-Bukhari 8, Sahih Muslim 8a, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2609, and Sahih Muslim 16c.
Saudi Arabia has the Shahada written on their flag in Arabic (as you can see pictured above).
The green of the flag represents Islam. Many say that green was Prophet Muhammad's favorite color.
The sword represents a commitment to justice.
